SUMMARY:DSSS@UofT: Gillian Hadfield
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of the Data Science Speaker Series at U of T with:\nGillian K. Hadfield\nSchwartz Reisman Chair in Technology and Society, Professor of Law, and Professor of Strategic Management\nDirector, Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society\nUniversity of Toronto\nFaculty Affiliate, Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence\nSenior Policy Advisor, OpenAI\nFree Event | Registration Required\nTalk Title: Why machine learning has us all talking about bias, privacy, and the end of democracy\nAbstract:\nIn this talk, I’ll discuss the features of machine learning that distinguish it from conventional data science and how those differences raise new issues for data scientists. These are issues that are increasingly discussed in popular media raising concerns about responsible or ethical AI: algorithmic bias, transparency, and accountability. I’ll also discuss how the growth in the importance of machine learning in industry contributes to heightened concerns around privacy, antitrust, behavioural manipulation, and political instability.\nSpeaker Profile:\nGillian K. Hadfield is the director of the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. She is the Schwartz Reisman Chair in Technology and Society, professor of law and of strategic management at the University of Toronto, a faculty affiliate at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and a senior policy advisor at OpenAI. Her current research is focused on innovative design for legal and regulatory systems for AI and other complex global technologies; computational models of human normative systems; and working with machine learning researchers to build ML systems that understand and respond to human norms.\n
