SUDS International

Through DSI’s Summer Undergraduate Data Science (SUDS) Opportunities, international institutions can provide their students with an exciting opportunity to engage in hands-on research led by University of Toronto faculty and scientists at DSI affiliated research institutes. This provides them with the skills needed as well as developing a network of colleagues to launch a successful career in data sciences and contribute to building expertise at their home institution.

SUDS is offered from May to August each year.

Research Experience

  • SUDS Scholars engage in hands-on data science research, gaining practical experience and contributing to cutting-edge discoveries.
  • DSI provides a list of faculty members and research projects that align with the partnering institutions’ research interests and for which faculty and scientists are seeking students. The home institution matches their students to these projects based on the Scholars’ skills, interests and expertise.

Cohort Programming

SUDS Scholars receive critically important data science skills and professional development training, preparing them for successful careers. The SUDS Cohort Program begins with a bootcamp that covers essential skills in Python, R, SQL, machine learning, and visualization.

Research Showcase

SUDS Scholars present their research to an audience of academics and industry leaders at the SUDS Showcase in mid-August.

Support for Home Institutions

  • Visa assistance: DSI supports facilitating students’ visa applications.
  • On-campus accommodation: DSI assists in identifying comfortable and convenient on-campus housing for the Scholars.
  • Health coverage enrollment: SUDS Scholars are enrolled in the University Health Insurance Plan for comprehensive health coverage.

Home Institution Responsibilities

SUDS Scholars must be recipients of an academic research award from their home institution for the duration of their time in Canada.

In addition to paying the DSI administrative fee, the home institution provides:

  • Selection of scholars
  • Accommodation and living costs, health insurance
  • Visa application fee for work permits
