Conditions of Membership

1. Observing the DSI’s Values and Code of Conduct that encapsulate the inclusive culture that the DSI aims to foster.

• Written agreement to adhere to these policies will be a condition of participation in the DSI for all members, students, and visitors.

Membership Expectations

DSI members are expected to be ambassadors for the DSI and for data sciences at U of T. Here are some ways members can be ambassadors:

• List DSI as one of their U of T affiliations on their cv, talks, papers, grant proposals, letters of reference, press articles, etc.
• Help promote the DSI internally and externally.
• Participate in the DSI intellectual community.
• Work with the DSI communications team to publicize research and educational contributions to data science.
• List the DSI in any grant received through the DSI and publication funded by such grant.

• Eligibility to apply for DSI funding and supports.

Networking

• Trainee community events, activities, and training.
• A calendar of activities that foster the exchange of ideas and the partnering of disciplines. These include monthly talks showcasing internationally renowned data scientists.
• Inclusion in the DSI directory: a simple and hassle-free wayfinding tool to help find scholars interested or engaged in data sciences at U of T.
• A member newsletter with information and updates about DSI news, events, and funding opportunities. Sign up for the DSI newsletter.
• An annual Research Day where the work of member faculty and trainees is showcased, and external partners and community stakeholders participate attend, speak, and exhibit.
• Networking events to bring together trainees from across U of T to help start, evolve, or cement collaborations.

Training and Research Supports

• Eligibility to apply for DSI programming and funding and use DSI infrastructure.
• Option to join a mentoring program and an ongoing series of training activities for DSI trainees, early-career researchers, staff members, and assistant professors.
• Assistance with external collaborations, commercialization, and grants, support for funding applications.
• Eligibility to apply for the services of a programmer/software developer.
• Guidance on access to data and computing infrastructure and contract negotiation.
• Workshops around Thematic Programs that catalyze the formation of new collaborative research teams (CRTs) and assist in potential partnerships with invited external groups.
• An institution-wide job-seekers network to assist trainees and early-career researchers find employment in academia and industry through informational career sessions and with writing job applications and preparing for interviews.
