Develop practical skills for deploying and operating machine learning systems in real-world environments across industry, research, and public-sector contexts.
Deploying AI focuses on the workflows, tools, and design decisions involved in moving models—particularly large language models—into production. You’ll develop hands-on experience with deployment patterns, model evaluation, and system-level considerations such as performance, latency, and cost.
Prepare to support and lead applied AI initiatives while building the practical experience to take AI from prototype to production.
Learners receive a University of Toronto Data Sciences Institute–branded microcredential that can be listed on a résumé or LinkedIn profile.

The Deploying AI microcredential can be combined with the Data Science Foundations microcredential to form the Data Science and Deploying AI Certificate.
Gain essential technical skills for deploying AI through our engaging online instructor-led webinars. This microcredential is delivered over 3 weeks and features a case study presentation led by an industry expert. We focus on how to apply Large Language Models (LLMs) to build applications. We begin with a brief overview of LLMs and then focus on how to consistently evaluate their outputs. Learners will explore how recent advances in AI can be applied to solve real-world problems.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this microcredential, participants will be able to:
The Data Sciences Institute is a University of Toronto hub and incubator for data science research, training, and partnerships. The DSI’s mission is to provide leadership and capacity to catalyze the transformative nature of data sciences across a broad range of disciplines.
Deploying AI is designed for learners who want to develop practical skills for deploying machine learning systems in real-world environments. It is well suited for learners interested in implementing, supporting, or scaling AI-enabled systems in real-world contexts.
This microcredential is appropriate for learners who have foundational data science and experience and are ready to move beyond model development into applied deployment workflows. It is particularly relevant for those involved in applied research, product development, or operational AI initiatives.
Learners who have completed the Data Science Foundations microcredential or equivalent training will be well prepared for this offering.
Yes. Learners are expected to have foundational data science skills prior to enrolling.
Participants should be comfortable with:
The Data Science Foundations microcredential is designed to provide these prerequisites and serves as a recommended entry point for learners planning to take Deploying AI.
Deploying AI focuses on the applied skills required to move machine learning models, particularly large language models, into production environments. The microcredential emphasizes practical deployment considerations, including evaluation, system design, performance trade-offs, and operational constraints.
Through hands-on exercises and real-world case studies, learners gain experience with common deployment patterns such as retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning, and agent-based workflows. The curriculum supports learners in developing the judgment and technical fluency needed to work with deployed AI systems in professional contexts.
Deploying AI also offers a flexible way to upskill and earn a University of Toronto Data Sciences Institute–branded microcredential, which can be stacked with Data Science Foundations to earn the Data Science and Deploying AI Certificate.
Yes. Deploying AI is part of DSI’s stackable microcredential framework.
Learners who complete Data Science Foundations and Deploying AI are eligible to earn the Data Science and AI Certificate. Data Science Foundations provides the required prerequisites and prepares learners to succeed in Deploying AI.
The microcredential is offered live, online over a three-week period.
Sessions are held three days per week for 2.5 hours per day (Tuesday–Thursday, 6:00–8:30 PM). Optional support and facilitated work periods with learning support staff are available for half an hour before and after each class, as well as Fridays from 1:00–2:30 PM. These sessions provide opportunities to ask questions and receive help with assignments; no new material is introduced.
The microcredential includes applied exercises and an industry-informed case study that exposes learners to real-world AI deployment scenarios and decision-making.
Evaluation: Completion is based on successful completion of assignments and quizzes aligned with the learning outcomes.
The cost for the microcredential is $650.
Learners that have completed the DSI Data Science or Machine Learning Software Foundations Certificates can register before March 31 for a subsidized price of $475 with the financial support of Upskill Canada, powered by Palette Skills and the Government of Canada.
Participants must attend synchronous sessions for about 7.5 hours per week over three weeks. These sessions will have homework and assessments designed to create opportunities to apply newly learned skills and to assess participants’ learning.
Due to the nature and pace of the microcredential, it is important that participants attend the sessions and complete assessments on time. New topics are introduced weekly, so participants must be able to engage fully.
A recording can be made available to you upon request.
U of T staff may be eligible to apply for the Staff Tuition Waiver for this microcredential, depending on their employee group and how the learning relates to their role. For details and the application form, please see the central tuition waiver information and consult with your manager and HR.
Waiver forms are available through the People Strategy, Equity & Culture website. Please note that the application process is managed by your divisional HR office. Interested staff should use the existing Staff Tuition Waiver form and include a link to the Deploying AI webpage and the registration fee (pre-tax). Central Benefits will determine eligibility and the amount that can be covered on an individual basis. If approved, you will be provided guidance on the payment process and recording microcredential completion.
Yes, U of T postdoctoral fellows that have the pre-requisites can register for Deploying AI.
Postdoctoral fellows can explore funding support through the School of Graduate Studies Professional Development Reimbursement for Postdoctoral Fellows . Please contact your unit’s HR representative for guidance.
Yes, the Deploying AI microcredential is eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). You must first register and pay for the microcredential and then apply for OSAP.
Visit the University of Toronto Registrar Office's website for eligibility and information on how to apply.
