Purpose

The Data Sciences Institute (DSI) will provide awards worth up to $100,000 in Anthropic Claude API tokens to researchers at the University of Toronto and external funding partner institutions. Awardees will have their credits transferred directly into their Claude Console accounts.

DSI places no restrictions on the use of Claude tokens, nor does it provide terms beyond those specified by Anthropic in its compliance documentation. For Claude API users, Anthropic does not use code or prompts sent to Claude for model training, though input and output data is retained on servers for a period of time, and there is no guarantee that data will be stored on Canadian infrastructure. It is recommended that researchers review the University of Toronto’s Guidelines for Using Generative AI and Data Classification Standard when considering whether to use Claude in their work.

The competition has two tiers:

  1. Claude Code projects. These awards will be worth up to $10,000 and are intended for teams who wish to use the API credits specifically for the Claude Code platform. These credits may be awarded on a rolling basis.
  2. Claude Research projects. These awards will be worth up to $100,000 and are intended for teams who wish to use the API credits for research workflows, such as those described in the Claude for Life Sciences documentation.

Submitted projects should be prepared to exhaust the credits within the 12-month timeframe. DSI may recover any unused credits after this period has lapsed. Questions regarding eligibility should be directed to awards.dsi@utoronto.ca.

Successful applicants will be required to:

  • Present the project and related findings in oral or poster format at annual DSI Talent Showcases within 1 to 2 years from when a Notification of Award has been sent.
  • Submit a brief summary report that outlines the use of the Claude API and any resulting abstracts, presentations (poster or oral), and/or publications.

In addition, awardees may be called upon to act as reviewers for future DSI award competitions.

The DSI is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from racialized persons / persons of colour, women, Indigenous / Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
