SUDS Showcase – Information for Scholars

About

The SUDS Showcase is an excellent opportunity to present your research, connect with faculty members, and learn more about the exciting research that your fellow scholars are conducting. This year’s Showcase is set for  August 15, 2024. We invite student supervisors, faculty and partners from across our DSI community for this in-person event.  Selected Scholars will present their work orally and all Scholars will are invited to present posters. We will have awards for the best presentation and the best poster.

Please note the information below:  

Abstracts

  • Abstracts must be reviewed by the supervisor prior to submission.
  • Maximum 350-word limit.
  • The abstract should include the purpose of the research; data science methods; any results and conclusions or results expected by the time of presentation.
  • Abstracts must be submitted online via a form by July 9, 2024.
  • Abstracts will be reviewed and selected scholars will have a chance to present their projects in the DSI SUDS Research Day (see below “Presentations”).

Selection for Presentations

  • Clear and concise description of the research – focused objectives, stated study design/methodology, presented results (whether preliminary), and well-drawn conclusion and/or recommendations for future research. 
  • Scholars must be able to attend the SUDS Showcase August 15 in-person to present
  • Selected Scholars will be contacted by July 18. 

Presentations

  • Selected Scholars will present for up to 5 minutes, and there will be a short question period. 
  • The presentation should highlight the topic of the research, data science methods, and any results, conclusions or expected results.
  • There will be faculty members and Scholars from a broad range of disciplines present, so the presentation should be understandable for a non-specialist audience.
  • There will be a poster section at the SUDS Showcase. All Scholars are invited to showcase their research with a poster.

Poster Session

Scholars who are not selected to present orally are invited to showcase their research with a poster. 

  • Posters should be readable by viewers five feet away and should display the paper title, authors and affiliations. The message should be clear and understandable without oral explanation.   • There is  poster template but we request you include the DSI logo in your poster (linked here), with the following wording in the acknowledgment section: “The (name of the project) is supported by the Data Sciences Institute, University of Toronto”. 
  • Poster size can be up to 4 feet wide by 3 feet tall. Please ensure your poster fits within this area. We will provide push pins to attach your poster to the poster stand. 
  • If you already have a poster that is larger – please let us know we can make accommodations 
  • The DSI Administrative Assistant will send you info on your poster location. On the morning of August 15, please check-in at the registration desk outside the SUDS Showcase room. Please ensure your poster is up by 9:30 a.m. 

Key Dates

  • June 21: Scholars will have an opportunity to workshop their draft abstract and receive feedback and advice as part of the SUDS Cohort Programming.
  • July 9: Deadline to submit abstract.
  • July 18: Selected Scholars for presentation will be contacted. 
  • August 9: Deadline to provide the presentation. 
  • August 10: We will communicate the final presentation schedule.
  • August 15, 10 am to 2 pm: SUDS Showcase!
